Genocide victims get free medical services
All genocide victims (survivors) in Rwanda are provided with free medical help as Rwanda prepares for the 20th genocide commemoration. According to FARG (the fund that supports the poor genocide survivors) in Rwanda, this project aims at treating the diseases that were caused by genocide so people can commemorate in good health.
Théophile Ruberangeyo the coordinator of FARG says the research has shown more than 18, 000 genocide survivors have diseases and 15, 000 have trauma brought about by the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis.
Ruberangeyo explains that about 18, 651 genocide survivors with ailments and more than 15, 000 trauma cases caused by genocide and more than 18 000 have already received treatments in fourteen
The most conditions being treated caused by the genocide include High Blood Pressure, Fistula in women who were raped and trauma among others. Providing free medical services will not only treat the survivors’ physical wounds, but also the invisible scars on their hearts which were caused by the 1994 genocide movements.
This year 2014, about Rwf800 million is expected to be used in the treatment of the 1994 genocide survivors. This amount will take care of the genocide victims receiving treatment in or outside the country.
