Security & Hygiene campaign begun in Kigali
Kigali is one of the cleanest cities in Africa as a result of government initiatives in promoting general cleanliness, infrastructure maintenance, greening and beautification drives and community participation.
Kigali is the capital city of Rwanda. Residents of the city have half a year to implement security and hygiene strategies on community and family levels in the third phase of the “Security and Hygiene” promotion campaign in their city. This is a great campaign and was launched last week on January 16, 2014 at the Rwanda National Police headquarters in Kacyiru.
The participants will include administrative sectors, waste collection companies, transporters, artists and journalists, who will be recognized and awarded for their role in supporting and promoting hygiene and security in the city.
The half year exercise is an initiative of Rwanda National Police (RNP) and the Kigali City council aimed at bringing various players on board to strengthen security and hygiene.
At the security level, this campaign will mainly focus on: fighting drugs and alcohol abuse in the city, ensuring safety and security in public places around the city, fighting noise pollution and use of plastic bags in the country, addressing issues of prostitution, street children and beggars, fighting gender violence and strengthening community night patrols.
While on the hygiene level, the campaign will mainly focus on waste Management, personal hygiene, hygiene in homes and hotels, greening and city beautification and implementation of hygiene standards in public places.
According to Rwanda National Police speaks persons, the winning sector in hygiene will be awarded with a vehicle, tipper type while the winner in security will get a vehicle, double-cabin tipper truck.
“Security and hygiene are the source of development and these move hand-in-hand. We are very determined to achieve this goal so as to make Kigali in particular and Rwanda in general, safer and cleaner.” Fidel Ndayisaba and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana said
According to the 3rd Kigali Environment Outlook Report, released in December, 2013, despite the fact that Kigali is one of Africa’s cleanest cities, some Kigali areas are not as clean. Issues to be addressed include; environmental pollution, waste and rain water poor drainage systems.
