MUSEUM OF ENVIRONMENT IN RWANDA
Museum of environment in Karongi was opened up in June 2014. So far it is the only museum in Africa that focuses on the environment. Museum of environment has a Rwandan herbal garden located on the top of the double stall building.
The museum is situated in Karongi (Rwanda)-Western Province. The museum helps in educating visitors and helps them to understand the importance of protecting and safeguarding the environment. The aim is to protect the swamps, forests, water bodies, hills/ mountains among others.
The building is set on two floors and a traditional herbal medicine garden with 127 tree species based at the rooftop. Not only protecting the environment, the museum also provides employment opportunities to the local residents. The museum also attracts tourists to the district hence foreign exchange. The revenue collected from the museum is used to support the nearby areas like improving the standards of the people in the area.
This is another great component of Rwanda tourism attractions on addition to other historical, culture and genocide memorial museums, as well as mountain gorillas in Volcanoes national park, chimpanzees in Nyungwe forest and other wildlife in Akegera national park.
