Nyarushishi Genocide memorial Construction in Rusizi
Rusizi district is ready to spend Rwf50 million for the construction of Nyarushishi Genocide memorial museum. The construction work should be completed by the beginning of next year 2015. For over a decade, Nyarushishi genocide memorial construction has been on standstill due to poor master plan, low quality iron sheets and insufficient ventilation of the mass grave.
The new master plan has been developed the site now and according to Basile Bayihiki; the vice mayor in charge of social affairs in Rusizi district, the new master plan for the site will rectify previous errors that delayed the completion of construction works. The Nyarushishi Genocide memorial will be the biggest and most modern site to keep the Rusizi genocide remains.
After completion of this work by early next year, some genocide remains from different areas of Rusizi will be transferred to the new facility before the 21 commemoration. This is according to Mr. Nshimyumukiza Micheal, coordinator of National Commission for the Fight against Genocide in Rusizi and Nyamasheke districts.
Mr. Nshimyumukiza added that the construction of Nyarushishi genocide memorial museum had cost over Rwf50 million. Genocide memorial site / museum is where the remains of 1994 Tutsi genocide victims across the country are laid to rest as way of restoring their dignity lost during the brutal death.
